Best Geeky Finds – A Brain-numbing Zombie Treat

Blog-BGFIt’s October 1, which means it is now considered “normal” to watch horror movies all month long. I love the classics, digging into the original Night of the Living Dead and Last Man on Earth, but sometimes you just need to shut off your brain and watch something stupid that has no redeeming value. Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse (2015, R) is just that. Think Superbad meets Fear the Walking Dead

Scouts Guide (minus the apostrophe, a tiny issue that bothers me the most about this movie) is about three high school sophomore boy scouts. As a former cub scout, I admire anybody who makes it this far into scouting. Ben (Tye Sheridan) and Carter (Logan Miller) are on a camping trip to commemorate the third scout, Augie (Joey Morgan), getting his Condor patch. While Ben and Carter plan to sneak away from the campsite to join a Senior party, a zombie virus has been spreading around town.

scouts-guideWhile escaping from a strip club, they meet up with Denise (Sarah Dumont), a former high school classmate now a bartender at the club. From here, the adventure leads into finding the Senior party where Carter’s sister is thought to be, as they escape hordes, build weapons, and witness many things that would make the mind of a fan of classy movies hurt.

I could explain the rest of this adventure, but if you’ve seen one plotless zombie movie, you’ve seen them all. I highly encourage this semi-plotless zombie movie though if you are seeking a mind-numbing treat. The trio do a great job lightening up the dark plot, while David Koechner as the Scout leader that simply won’t die keeps audiences guessing.
