Best Geeky Finds – Catch Me When I Fall by Vicki Leigh

bestgeekyfindsIt’s the same dream every night. You’re enjoying a day at the beach with all of your closest friends, having lunch the way it was meant to be eaten — from a picnic basket. Nothing could go wrong. Then you look over at the lake. Before you can think about what is happening, three crocodiles come at you and your friends, intent on their own lunch. This is your worst fear, and has been the nightmare possessing your mind for the past week.

Your Protectors of the Night must have their work cut out for them if so many Nightmares are able to feed. Nightmares — demonic beings that infiltrate our minds and feed on our fears, forcing us to think of these when our minds are vulnerable — would be extremely powerful, creating constant fear if it were not for the Dreamcatchers and Dreamweavers assigned to everybody. These protectors combat the Nightmares and create pleasant dreams to replace the fears in our minds.

Daniel has been a Protector since he died in battle during the War of 1812. He has excelled at his job fighting Nightmares, and has seen his charges age and die while he watches over them invisibly every night. That is, until he is charged with Kayla, a sixteen-year-old from Columbus, Ohio, who lives in mental ward. She believes that she personally burned a man to death on her birthday.CMWIF

During one extra busy night watching over Kayla, the Nightmares overpowered Daniel and his Dreamweaver, causing him to show himself just as Kayla awoke to a bombardment of Nightmares — beings humans should not be able to see. Most humans that is…

I first read this book at the beginning of summer, and each reading has had me hooked from the first chapter. Vicki Leigh effectively describes characters and settings to the point that I could easily imagine a hidden castle among the streets of Rome or the Protectors’ lofts in Ohio. My favorite images from the book were the Nightmares. Originally thinking of them as resembling the Heartless from the Kingdom Hearts games, I continued to read, rendering an even darker and demonic creature in my head.

Leigh takes common tropes of supernatural and fantasy teen romance and turns then upside down by adding warlocks, demons, and psychopaths, aspects fans of the show Supernatural may be familiar with, but would be surprised to find in the book’s genre if they were not already expecting it. That’s what she excels at in her writing though; readers will not know what to expect from characters in this book, even up until the very end.

Vicki Leigh is a local author from Akron, Ohio. A fan of many genres, including fantasy, she has always considered herself a writer. If that wasn’t an option though, she says she would be a Hunter, fighting creatures the Winchesters are too busy to handle. She is currently also working on a separate contemporary Young Adult novel under the pseudonym Tory Rigby.

The sequel, Find Me If You Dare, is set to reach bookstores this December, ready to feed on readers’ fears even further. More information about both books can be found at Vicki Leigh’s website. You can purchase this book at your local bookstore, as well as on Amazon and Leigh’s website.
