Best Geeky Finds – DC Bombshells

Blog-BGFLast weekend I was reintroduced to a comic series I started reading the first issue of back in October, but was too far behind to find the remaining issues. While I hate to intrude on Vern’s territory, I felt that the digital and print series DC Bombshells is too impressive not to discuss this week.

DC Bombshells is set in one of the many multiverses in the DC universe, this time set during the 1940s. Kathy Kane (Batwoman) and Bette Kane (Flamebird) are players for the Gotham Knights baseball team while male soldiers are off at war. Meanwhile, they fight crime on the streets of Gotham – a familiar image often seen in the original origin of Batman. Unknown to them, Amanda Waller recruits Kathy and Detective Maggie Sawyer for a secret mission to end the war.

Kara Starikov and Kortni Duginovna (Supergirl and Stargirl) are Russian fighter pilots-in-training. When they are shot at while flying, their powers are discovered, only to be used against them by the Russian military.DC-COMICS-BOMBSHELLS-Cv1-7a98e

Steve Trevor is found attacked overseas by Amazonians for being a soldier in the war whose debris has destroyed their island. Steve’s life is saved by Wonder Woman, but her duty to her people may become much more as a result.

If you’ve seen the statues, stickers, and other collectibles, you’ll know multitudes of DC characters show up throughout this series, including Duella Dent (The Joker’s Daughter), Zatanna, Catwoman, Mera, Harley Quinn and even Batgirl. Being a bigger comic fan of DC over Marvel, and preferring the Marvel Cinematic Universe for their historically accurate and intriguing stories, this series combines both aspects. A feminist reinterpretation of the DC universe through history, this story is what Agent Carter would be had it been written by different authors and introduced with different characters.

You can easily begin reading the series on comixology, with a chapter of each issue for only 99 cents. The series is currently up to 30 digital issues (10 print issues). If you enjoy wartime history, strong female characters, or even A League of their Own, this series is a must-read.
