Best Geeky Finds – Disney Vault Talk

Is there a mouse in your house? When you zip-a-dee-doo-dah, do you also zip-a-dee-a? When the neighbors get out of hand do you enjoy singing the appropriate response at them? Well then the Disney Vault Talk podcast is a must-listen.

Steve Glosson & Teresa Delgado go film by film in Disney’s order of full-length animated films, starting back in June 2014 with their discussion of Snow White & the Seven Dwarves. With each film the hosts look at the history of the film and the backstory of the original tale, when there is one. With these magical tales, Teresa also pulls out fun facts on the films. For instance, did you know that the Adriana Caselotti, the actress who voices Snow White in the original 1937 film, was chosen specifically for her singing voice with no credence for whether she could act?

Ken (of a certain podcast fame whose name happens to be at the top of this page) recommended this podcast to me recently and I have been addicted to the show since, listening whenever I have a chance. Despite this, I am only about 6 months into the show, but each episode transports me back to my childhood from the opening notes of the shows introduction. Whenever I hear “Oo-De-Lally” from Robin Hood or Stitch’s speech about the importance of family I tear up remembering how happy I was not only the first time I ever saw these movies, but also every viewing since.

Disney animated films were a big staple of my childhood. Recently my mother found a large box of videos on which she had recorded movies from the Disney channel so my sister and I could watch them whenever we wanted. Cinderella and The Lion King ruled our living room and cassette player with few breaks unless Dad got control of the television before us kids. Thinking on this, I realize that my movie collection is menial as compared to the now dead videos from our closet, but I still find myself replenishing my collection of Disney films in their Storybook video cases so I have an excuse to immerse myself in Belle’s and Ariel’s stories (when I get to these episodes I may have difficulty paying attention at work).

When Glosson and Delgado finish discussing every Disney animated feature, they plan to review the Disney/Pixar films, followed by the live-action films. The duo also have a separate podcast where they discuss the Star Wars: Rebels TV series. While I have not listened to these shows yet, their love of Star Wars is greatly shown in their other discussions.

If your history with Disney is like mine, I recommend this podcast. If you are unsure about starting a new show, I recommend listening to episode 3, a live show where Steve and Teresa give each of their Top Tens. This episode gives a taste of what’s to come and digs into the hosts’ personalities. This is a great way to forget the craziness and just laugh. As Snow White said, “When there’s too much to do, don’t let it bother you. Forget your troubles.”
