Best Geeky Finds – Holy Musical Batman!

Blog-BGFWith Batman ♥ Superman coming to theaters next week, I couldn’t help but ponder whether the epic battle between the two heroes will be anything like Starkid Productions predicted in their 2014 musical Holy Musical B@man! In the musical, after Batman (played by Joe Walker) throws the Joker off the Greater Gotham Bridge, he becomes depressed because the only person who really knew him is now dead. To make things worse, he realizes that Alfred (Chris Allen) has been tricking him into thinking he’s had more friends all his life.

Meanwhile Superman (Brian Holden) tries to comfort Batman who won’t have anything to do with him. This is made worse when Bruce takes in young Dick Grayson/Robin (Nick Lang), who all of Gotham hates. This escalates into an epic West Side Story-esque battle between Batman and Superman. (Please note that this video contains adult language. NotHoly_Musical_Batman_(album)hing major but the main chorus is mainly cursing).

Starkid Productions has done many parody musicals in the past, most recently Star Wars and Oregon Trail. As with all of these shows, while they use the characters and storylines, nothing is canon. As a result the group created a new character, the Candyman, to replace the Joker as head of the Rogues. Everything the Candyman says is some play on a type or brand of candy. Introducing this character, not to mention the lack of the official “Batman” name due to copyright laws, add an aesthetic of the 1960s television series. The songs in this show also bring out fun and whimsy nobody thought could ever been seen in a Batman story, especially since it remains dark and gritty while the music is uplifting. Don’t understand? Watch when Bruce sings about a fling he had that ended due to a shellfish allergy, as bats dance behind him.

holy-musical-bman1I will say that even though this is fun and the fighting is very comical, there is adult language throughout the show, especially in the above scene. There is also plenty of drinking, but mostly by Green Lantern (Heineken or Rolling Rock – he can only make green beers). It might not be suitable for young children, but if you’re fine with cursing, it becomes even funnier seeing Superman curse and smoke when he’s still trying to be the Boy Scout. Who knows whether the new crossover movie will be any good, but this musical is definitely worth checking out.

Here’s the playlist of the full show.
