Best Geeky Finds – Investigating the Solve-It Squad

“Who the H*** is giving a middle-schooler access to bank records?!”

The Hardy Boys. Nancy Drew. Mystery Inc. These great crime-solving teenagers have withstood history as some of the greatest sleuths right up there with Holmes & Watson. Scooby Doo has even been rebooted as a post-apocalyptic zombie thriller comic. It has never, however, been a stage play – until now.

Written as a satire of pre-teen crime solvers, though very much a parody of Scooby Doo, The Solve-It Squad is the newest production from Tin Can Brothers (creators of Spies are Forever) to be on youtube. Keith, Gwen, Esther, Scrags, and of course Clubert, were once part of Mayberry’s Solve-It Squad. That is, until the case that ended it all – the Demonic Apostle, the one man in a mask that went so far as to murder Cluebert and use him as a sacrifice.

Twenty-five years later, the gang is back, reluctantly. Working for the FBI, Scrags (Joey Richter) has been given the case of a long lost serial killer who has begun again – the Demonic Apostle. The only way to stop this killing is get the gang back together, even if some have better things to do in their lives.

Sound familiar? Well there’s no Scrappy (yet), but once you watch it will be far from the live-action Scooby Doo movie. Esther (Lauren Lopez) is a pill-popping Sherlock, Gwen (Ashley Clements) is an egotistical actress, and Keith (Gabe Greenspan)… well less on traps and more on… nothing. Yet the actors do a top-notch job portraying each of these idiosyncrasies, from Esther’s fast-talking drug mimicry, to Keith’s panicked selfishness, the group feels like the perfect imitation of Mystery Inc.

Every Tuesday you can find the latest installment of the play at Tin Can Brothers’ Youtube page, or purchase the entire show on their website. Follow the mystery and learn who killed Clubert.
