Best Geeky Finds – A Matter for the Eighth Doctor

Aside from maybe 4, the Eighth Doctor, Paul McGann, is my favorite regeneration of the Doctor. While he was not seen for long in the TV movie, his character has lived on in Big Finish’s audio dramas, proving that he should have been the first Doctor to return when the series was rebooted. Unfortunately, he did not come back to television (other than the short 50th anniversary clip), but along with the audio dramas, Titan Comics has published a volume of comics encompassing his short run in comic form as well.

A Matter of Life and Death introduces the Doctor to Josie, a painter who is living in his home. At least one of his Earth homes. Given that he hasn’t been around in a few decades, it was up for grabs, even if he was still the landlord I suppose. Of all times to come back too. Suddenly Josie’s paintings have come to life and the creatures she painted are attacking the city. And all the Doctor came for was his copy of Jane Eyre!

While there are only five stories in this volume, each tale is its own individual story rather than one long story spread across the book. This is good for readers given that it appears the Eight Doctor’s series is no longer running. We are taken to a war zone on Junto with deadly crystal weapons, Victorian Scotland where a stage magician is performing more than just tricks on his audience volunteers, a dinner party on the cusp of a fairy invasion (or is it?), and a planet where humans are used to transfer consciousness to in order to blend in.

Each short story is perfect for this Doctor, and makes readers want even more when the book is over. It even has a cameo by a more modern Doctor and his companion.

I recommend not only checking out this book if you enjoy the Eighth Doctor’s stories, but also the Big Finish audio dramas for more adventure. This book follows these stories, but all can be joined at any point. If McGann is just not for you, Titan had many books with the Ninth, Tenth, Eleventh, and Twelfth Doctors, while Big Finish continues releasing journeys with Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvestor McCoy, and even new stories with David Tennant.
