Best Geeky Finds – A New Cut of an Old Classic

In 1990 we saw Edward Scissorhands leave his castle on the hill to visit the small California town he resided in. Sadly, it did not work out for him in the end and so he fled back to his large home, all alone. He was not forgotten though. As we saw at the end of the movie, Kim told her granddaughter stories of the man who brought the snow.

So, obviously, this couldn’t be the end of the story, right?

Edward Scissorhands: The Final Cut compiles all 10 issues of the IDW comic series, reprising the bright suburb and Edward’s gothic mansion. After many years secluded in his home, making statuary and reading the newspaper, Edward has come across some of his father’s old work, including the remains of one invention in the shape of a young boy, named Eli. He’s unsure what Eli’s purpose was, but after attempting to bring him to life, he gives up. Unfortunately for Edward, Eli does come to life and leaves the castle. Even worse, he discovers this only after finding his father’s note that Eli was homicidal and dangerous.

Meanwhile, Megan, Kim’s granddaughter, now a teenager, is dealing with the recent loss of her grandmother. Megan’s mother had a difficult relationship with her own mother, dealing with her parents’ arguments and abusive behavior as a result of memories of Edward that Kim often tried not bringing up. This caused Kim’s daughter to associate hatred with Edward. Between this and her terrible relationship with her own mother, she now does not have a good relationship with her own daughter.

As a result, Megan sneaks away on her trip to school and visits her grandmother’s storage unit where she finds a key to Edward’s gate… and his predicament. To save those hurt by Eli, Edward leaves the castle with Megan and returns to the world again, this time trying to save his name and help others.

The Final Cut tells this and a second story of Edward’s attempt to get hands, both bringing Edward Scissorhands to a new generation. Where he was once forced to hide away and not have a true ending, this graphic novel helps conclude his story and find happy spots for Edward and the Boggs family to stay. Don’t worry about the statuary though. There is still plenty, and the snow will still fall in California.
