Best Geeky Finds – A New Fantastic Trailer

The trailer for the next installment in the Harry Potter prequel films, Fantastic Beasts: the Crimes of Grindelwald, hit the internet Tuesday, and was immediately met with awe and anger. With all fandom films of any type this is to be expected, but many of these problems have been posed for a while now, some originating back with the last Potter film, Deathly Hallows, Part 2

For one, why do people keep apparating onto school grounds? It was established several times throughout the books that an anti-disapparating charm was placed around Hogwarts to prevent anybody from popping in or out of the school. Only at certain times was the charm temporarily removed, such as in the case of of classes on the subject, or Dumbledore’s multiple trips disapparating from his office (being headmaster has its privileges).

Yet in the final film we see Voldemort’s army apparate on the other side of a hill outside the school. And now, as this trailer opens, we see the Minister of Magic and other government officials pop in on a bridge steps away from the doors. So there’s the question of when and who placed the charm and law. If at the time of these films the charm had not been implemented, despite it being a highly prestigious private school which would get very dangerous with wizards able to sneak in and out, was it Dumbledore who implemented it? If so, could his relationship with Grindelwald and knowledge of what he had done have been the reason for doing so in order to protect his students? And if this was Dumbledore, it would explain why there are so many loopholes for himself.

Speaking of Dumbledore, I noticed many twitter threads about his wardrobe. He’s a youthful professor whose reputation hasn’t completely been shredded by the media and politics. Where’s his flamboyant wizard’s robes. What about his favorite colorful muggle knit prints? My favorite fan comment on this was: “My guess would be that Dumbledore doesn’t have tenure yet, so he’s stuck with suits.” I feel like the reason for this sudden change in wardrobe from his classic wizard look falls down to his being played by Jude Law who, while he was not my preferred pick for the character, looks and sounds pretty good from these few shots.

Leaving behind the constant issues of  casting for Gellert Grindelwald (played by an unnecessary Johnny Depp), what we have seen from the film eight months in advance looks to be an exciting adventure that doesn’t rely too much on what the original eight movies offered. Returning characters from the first FB are shown, including Jacob Kowalksi, whose mind wipe is apparently gone, as well as Tina, apparently now having a bigger role to play at the MAGUSA. And, of course, the series title character, author New Scamander is back, this time digging himself deeper in the political struggles going on when all he wants to do is study animals.

I don’t know what to expect come November, but what I do know is, no matter what my feelings are now, I’ll be in the theater opening weekend for Fantastic Beasts 2.
