Last week, Book Riot posted an article that recommended books about comics. It featured seven books that serve as introductions to the comic book world, studies of comics as an art form and look at subgenres, such as Manga. The writer admits it is not an exhaustive list and there are a few we would add to it. 

  On The Graphic Novel by Santiago García is a very dense read, but an interesting one. It is essentially an academic treatise on graphic novels and comics. There is a lot of history, as well as some philosophy. Much of the commentary is non-US based, which makes it an intriguing read for those looking for a worldview on the genre. Definitely something to take your time with.

Deus ex Comica: The Rebirth of a Comic Book Fan by Adam Besenyodi involves the author rediscovering his love of comics as an adult. He discusses the highs and lows of collecting, falling in love with art and story, and watching his son discover the joy of comics. It’s an enjoyable read, whether you’re a lifetime comic reader or (re)discovering the genre.

 Marvel Comics: The Untold Story by Sean Howe is an account of the comic giant’s history, including the well-known figures and characters that have come through their doors. Not only is it a look at the comic book industry, but it also contains a lot of anecdotes from those involved.

The Secret History of Wonder Woman by Jill Lepore is a great historical study of the best known female superhero in comics. Most fans know the basic story of how Wonder Woman came to be, but there are details that may surprise many readers who have only a passing knowledge of the character. It is well worth delving deeper.
