Comics Cosmos – Cloak and Dagger

ccEarlier this year, Cloak and Dagger received a full season order and is expected to air sometime in 2017 on Freeform. Of course, knowing what that network is all about, it should come as no surprise that the main characters are teenagers. But if they do things right, it could turn out to be an interesting show.

Tyrone (Cloak) and Tandy (Dagger) are teenage runaways who end up with powers. It’s a rather Romeo and Juliet premise, with Tyrone being a poor kid running from a life of crime (though he is not a criminal) and Tandy being the rich girl running from a family that didn’t care about her. Of course, they meet on the streets and stick together. Initially, their powers came from an injection by a drug lord of sorts, but that origin was later ret-conned into the two having been born mutants and the drug simply “activated” their powers. Cloak is able to teleport and become intangible, while Dagger can create “daggers” of light that can be used as weapons or to heal.MARVEL'S CLOAK AND DAGGER

The characters originally appeared in an issue of Peter Parker, the Spectacular Spider-Man in 1982. Over the years they have been affiliated (together and individually) with a number of teams, including X-Men, Secret Avengers, Runaways and Marvel Knights. They have also faced a range of villains, including formidable ones like Thanos and Doctor Doom. They tend to fluctuate between good and evil, often skirting the line or going vigilante.

It will be interesting to see how these characters are handled on television. And just as interesting will be how they fit into the “everything is connected” realm of the Marvel Universe.
