Comics Cosmos – Let’s Get Lucky

If you’re interested in Marvel comics at all you’ve invariably heard of Domino (or if you’ve seen the trailer for a certain upcoming sequel). She’s been around since the 90s, most often as part of X-Force, but sometimes affiliated with other groups and, especially in recent years, a compatriot of Deadpool. Now Domino has returned in her own comic, written by the legendary Gail Simone with impressively fun art by David Baldeón.

For those not as familiar with the character, Domino is lucky… we’re talking really lucky. Her mutant ability is based on psionics and telekinesis affecting probability in her favor. The only thing is she doesn’t really control it – it just happens. In any stressful situation where probability factors into the outcome, Domino will be the one to come out on top, like hitting every target she shoots at or dodging punches thrown at her. And even though it’s a subconscious power she doesn’t control, she can “activate” it by purposely putting herself in harm’s way.

The new series Domino provides a fun introduction to the character. We get to see not only how she does in a fight – and how her powers work – but also what she’s like around associates and friends. Background narration provides the little details, like the fact that she’s not exactly thrilled to have little control over her powers. And then there’s Pip, bound to become the most adorable sidekick a mercenary has ever had. Simone has done a good job in the first issue of providing the start of a compelling plotline, while fleshing out a character we want to care about. And Baldeón’s artwork really fits Domino’s attitude and the tone of the story. Domino is worth picking up to see just how long her luck holds out.
