Comics Cosmos – Lucifer

ccThe second season of Lucifer started a couple weeks ago on Fox. For those unfamiliar with the show, it’s a crime drama with a twist. The main character is Lucifer Morningstar – THE Lucifer. He’s gotten tired of Hell and has come to Earth, Los Angeles to be more specific, to encourage the human race to indulge their passions. He runs a piano bar, has a demon right hand woman and helps the LAPD catch criminals… in his own unique way.

lucifercoverThe character inspiring the show originally appeared in The Sandman series by Neil Gaiman, then got his own spin off, appropriately called Lucifer. The television series doesn’t follow the comic storyline entirely. It does have Lucifer on Earth, running a bar, but there’s a lot to do with free will and not so much a crime story. There are similarities in the character himself too, from being sick of the stereotypes people hold about “the devil” to being very charming and able to influence people and situations. But the comics, not surprisingly, have a bigger focus on the supernatural and the abilities Lucifer has.

The tv series is fun and Lucifer himself is very likable. Even though there is a “crime of the week” element, there are also some plot threads running through the entire series. There are mysterious aspects of various characters and questions remain after each episode. It keeps viewers watching and, thankfully, with a second season there is a lot more to explore.
