If you prefer your comics to be less superhero and more fantasy, you might want to take a look at The Wicked + The Divine. From Image Comics, this dark, contemporary fantasy series is written by Kieron Gillen, with art by Jamie McKelvie. It follows a group of people, known as The Pantheon, who are reincarnated deities walking the earth.

The general plot follows various cycles, with the largest being life and death. The Pantheon is said to have a 90-year reincarnation cycle, with the actual reincarnated life lasting only two years. Every member of The Pantheon was an average person before being chosen to merge with the deity. They do not, however, get to refuse once they are chosen.

Not surprisingly, The Pantheon are major celebrities and the world knows what they claim to be (obviously, there are skeptics). There is an interesting mix of deities among them, including Lucifer, Baal and Dionysus. Sometimes it’s obvious who they are from the start and other times it’s more of a building mystery. But even as celebrities and gods, the members need to deal with the real world, which includes abiding by the laws – and that doesn’t go very well.

The basic concept of the book is nothing new, but the storylines and characterizations make it fresh. Plus, the artwork is fantastic. If you’re interested, The Wicked + The Divine already has four volumes available in trade paperback.
