Irregular’s Intel – Reboots Aren’t Just for TV and Movies Anymore

Blog-IIA few years ago, Kevin Smith penned a reboot of The Six Million Dollar Man called The Bionic Man. It had many of the things that I loved about the iconic show, but it also was updated for the  21st century (as a matter of fact, I think he was upped to six billion dollars). Nanotech was introduced as well as some abilities that Steve Austin did not have in the original series, things I felt worked. Not long after The Bionic Woman followed with similar success. But then I started to notice something… reboots were popping up everywhere!

He-Man, Thundercats, M.A.S.K., The Micronauts, Shaft, even ROM has found new life in the 21st century. Some of these properties are back in all of their former glory, but with a few changes, while other are full on reboots taking a popular property and making it relevant to today’s audience. I am all for this. For example, it may not be MY M.A.S.K., but I can still enjoy it and watch it develop for the generation behind me.

So often I hear people bemoan that there is nothing new. I think that we get a little to caught up in what’s new. There are TONS of untold stories within already existing properties begging to be told to enrich worlds that we love. Why not do that? Think about it, Star Trek and Star Wars have done this for YEARS and we love them for it. Let’s try that somewhere else, then.
