Irregular’s Intel – My Summer Vacation, Part 2

Blog-IIAnyone who has touched a comic has been influenced but Geppi, the man behind Geppi’s Entertainment Museum in Baltimore Maryland. Geppi, one time comic shop owner and baseball fan, was able to turn his passion into Diamond Distributors and to become part owner of the Baltimore Orioles. I can honestly say that his love for both shine through in this 10 year old museum.

Geppis1When Dawn and I first entered the building, we were greeted by images of classic comic covers and heroes from days passed. The elevator looked like something that belonged in an earlier version of a helicarrier too. The first room was filled with classic, silver and modern age comics. From Doc Savage to Doctor Strange and everything in between, including some books in my own personal collection. It was a moving experience to be surrounded by so many representations of what I have loved for so long.

The museum doesn’t just feature comics. There’s memorabilia from the Orioles’ early days, and toys that were used in marketing soap, toothpaste and a host of other goods. There are also letters and merchandise from mail-in fan clubs like SHAZAM! and Little Orphan Annie. It was amazing to see!

Geppis2As we approached the 60s and 70s things started to become more familiar. The board games were based on movies and tv shows (e.g., Miami Vice and The IPCRESS File). The toys from Star Trek, The Six Million Dollar Man, The Bionic Woman, Charlie’s Angels and every other property you could think of took me back. It was a pleasant trip down memory lane.

The gift shop was no joke, either! It was a comic shop, essentially. They sold current and back issues… all at a discount! Needless to say, money and goods were exchanged. I will definitely come back! Any geeksters looking for something fun to do in Baltimore… your search has ended!
