Into the Unknown – Unicorns, Part 3

UnknownLogoWell another week in the world of unicorns, alicorn and bones. Don’t eat alicorn it will give you diarrhea and won’t protect you from ghosts.

The extinct Siberian unicorn lived on the earth for much longer than scientists previously thought, and may have lived alongside humans. Scientists once believed Unicorns went extinct 350,000 years ago, yet a few hundred years ago humans hunted them and ate their body parts. But the discovery of a skull in Kazakhstan provides evidence that they only died out about 29,000 years ago, so did cavemen ride them into battle with modern humans? Despite its large horn, the “Siberian unicorn” looked more like a rhinoceros than the mythical creature its nickname refers to. It was about 6 feet tall, 15 feet long, and weighed about 9,000 pounds, making it more comparable to a woolly mammoth than a horse. (Maybe some type of fuzzy love child). The researchers are now studying how this creature was able to survive so much longer than many of its kind. Perhaps they lived so long because it was sooo very cold that virgins froze before catching the Unicorns. The south of Western Siberia was most likely some type of refuge, where this rhino persevered the longest in comparison with the rest of its range. Another theory is furry fat Unicorns could of migrate and lived there for a while in the more southern areas.

The body that was found was most likely a very large male (teeth were not preserved). The size of the unicorn rhino is the biggest ever written about and the proportions are normal for large rhinoceros. The habitat was a vast territory from the Don River to the east of modern Kazakhstan. An extinction period can now be compared with the boundary between old and very old but not as old as dust, as the scientists once thought. Of course nature throws the ball from left field on occasion. The researchers propose mass radiocarbon studies – the Unicorn body were previously regarded as ancient and presumed extinct more than 50,000 to 100,000 years ago. The researchers had to make adjustments in their understanding of the environmental conditions in the geologic time in general. “Understanding of the past allows us to make more accurate predictions about natural processes in the near future – it also concerns climate change.”

There are some mad scientists that want to combine the DNA of the fuzzy, fat unicorns and molest horses – after many, many generations they believe they will be able to bring unicorns back to life. To what, eat the unicorn’s body and horn, or to hunt them for sport like every other animal is? I say stop poking Pandora’s box, if you are remotely smart. But hey they did sniff the body of a baby mammoth. That is another story all by itself.

If you have any ideas or comments about the unicorns or the new direction of my blog, leave them in the comments below.
