Miss Dawn’s Musings – All About That Con

Blog-MissDawnsMusingsWith Con on the Cob coming up this week it got me thinking about cons in general. I love cons. This is really saying something because I’m an introvert by nature. But if you’re a geek and you’ve never had the opportunity to experience a convention, you don’t know what you’re missing. It’s fun, entertaining, crazy, amazing, exciting, exhausting… all crammed into just a few short days.

Some people enjoy going to cons to meet celebrities, others want to have a chat with their favorite author or artist, others want to learn something new at the panels or workshops, a lot of people go for the cosplay and of course some go to play games. I go for a bit of everything, but primarily to feel at home.

The first time hubby and I went to Dragon*Con years ago neither one of us knew what to expect. We had been to small, local cons, where a lot of the activity involves dealers selling comics and collectibles. But nothing can prepare you for your first big convention, and D*C is the biggest geek con around. After four full days of being around thousands of fellow geeks and making new friends, we didn’t want to leave. These were our people. After we got home, for the first time we experienced “con drop”, the feeling of “what do I do now? how do I go back to my daily life?” The craving to get back to the family of geekdom is what keeps us going to cons.

There is no feeling quite like being surrounded by dozens, hundreds, thousands of people who get it. They are fellow geeks. They understand every sci-fi, comic book, movie, gaming reference you make. They are more than happy to sit down with complete strangers to discuss a common fandom. There is a bonding that takes place and you can’t help but feel a part of the whole.

Non-geeks don’t understand the thrill of the con. They look at it from the outside and see a bunch of adults dressing up, playing games, talking about comics and they think we’ve just never grown up. But guess what, “growing up” doesn’t mean you need to stop having fun. A large majority of us are responsible adults, with everyday responsibilities and average jobs. So why shouldn’t we let loose every once in a while and act like complete fools over our interests and fandoms? I look forward to the exhilaration and exhaustion every single time.
