Miss Dawn’s Musings – Artsy, Crafty Geeks

Perusing another Oddmall (the odd/geeky arts & crafts show), it makes you think about what constitutes “geek” when it comes to handmade merchandise. Is it just using characters or insignia from various fandoms? Is it the style or overall look of a piece? Is it the representation of more intellectual pursuits?

The answer seems to be “I know it when I see it”. Every geek is a geek in their own way and things will appeal to one that don’t appeal to another. Sure, I love things that use my favorite Marvel characters or anything from Doctor Who, but I also love the strange human/animal hybrid sculptures and the taxidermy pieces and pretty much all things paranormal.

You could see some of these things at other craft shows (y’know, the stereotypical grandma variety) and they’d fit right in – knitwear, plushies, pottery, soaps. Even if they have the occasional fandom logo, they’d still “fit”. But surround them with other fandom-heavy merchandise and they are suddenly geek. And there’s nothing wrong with that!
