Miss Dawn’s Musings – Calm the F Down

Blog-MDMLast week there was a major reveal in the new Captain America comic. For geeks living under a rock, the last page of the book had Captain America saying “Hail Hydra”. Obviously a huge twist and could mean major things for the character. So, of course, geeks took to the interwebs immediately to decry the horror of such a phrase coming from a beloved character. (As an aside, it really ticked me off that everyone threw the “no spoilers” cry aside and posted about this from early morning, before the majority of people could even get to their comic shop and buy the issue. Also, the loudest complainers seemed to be those who don’t even read comics!)

569e646046152Now, I’m not a big Cap fan and I don’t read the comics. But it’s obvious that this would have fans up in arms. And that’s the whole point. Look at the publicity Marvel got for this! Look at how it totally stripped DC of headlines fro “Rebirth”! Even Stan the Man said he thought it was brilliant and wished he’d come up with it!

I was truly disappointed to see so many fans spouting hate toward Marvel and the creative team involved. The writer even received death threats… over a plot twist in a comic book! I’m at the head of the line of saying it’s not “just a comic”, but c’mon… death threats?! And this is only the first issue of the comic. Maybe try calming the fuck down until you see where the storyline is going. If a twist like this is going to make you drop a publisher, maybe you’re not cut out for fandom. Major twists happen all the time!

So really, calm down. Maybe take a moment to think about the fact that a comic book company does whatever it does to sell comics. And they are not going to screw around with one of their most popular characters unless there’s a plan in place to ultimately keep fans happy. It’s one line in one issue of one comic. Perhaps put the ADD in check for a bit and wait for the next issue.
