Miss Dawn’s Musings – Classic Geek Filmdom

Blog-MDMFor geeks of a certain age (north of 35), there are certain movies that should be on the “of course I’ve seen it” list. I’m not talking the obvious ones that should be on all geek lists regardless of age, like the original Star Wars trilogy or Lord of the Rings. No, I mean the less mainstream, the ones only lovers of scifi/fantasy would love… the true classics.

Honestly, when I started thinking of these movies, the list got pretty long. So I’m posting it below, divided into categories. But there are a few I need to comment on, a few that were pretty formative in making me the geek I am today.

I saw Flash Gordon, starring Sam Jones, a few times as a kid and it, along with the Battlestar Gallactica and Buck Rogers tv shows, formed my view of “outer space”. As far as I was concerned, everyone in space wore ostentatious, glittering outfits and had personal robot servants. Then The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth and The NeverEnding Story cemented my love of fantasy. And, all things considered, it’s obvious where my need for the “dark” in fantasy comes from.

Now some of these movies were much better to watch as a kid, but there’s something to be said for nostalgia in watching them even now. Anyway, here’s my list. What would you add to it?
