Miss Dawn’s Musings – Most Wonderful Time of the Year

Blog-MDMYes, it’s once again that time of the year when geeks gather together in California (or on the internet) for the latest and greatest rumors, releases and news. That’s right, San Diego Comic Con (SDCC) took place last weekend and, as usual, some long awaited trailers were released and there were a few surprises along the way. Here are some of the things I paid attention to (with links so you can check things out, of course).

There were a few television trailers released, including for the next seasons of The Walking Dead and Sherlock, but the ones I found most interesting were for new shows. First up was Luke Cage and it looks as fantastic as expected. The Netflix/Marvel partnership hasn’t made a wrong step yet and the shows keep getting better. Then there’s Neil Gaiman’s American Gods, which should get anyone who’s read the novel excited. Seeing so many of the “gods” in the trailer was awesome! And another show based on books is Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency. It’s a lesser-known series by Douglas Adams, the author of Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, but still has the irreverent humor you’d expect. Finally, there’s Legion, a Marvel mutant show that’s not about the X-Men but looks pretty fantastic.

In movie news that came out of SDCC, I was glad to hear there would be an animated film of Justice League Dark. That comic has some great characters with a paranormal bent, including Constantine. Of course, the two big trailers that a lot of people were awaiting were Justice League and Wonder Woman. Both looked pretty good, but I’m more impressed with JL. The movie definitely has a different feel to it than other DC movies and the plot has a slightly different focus than I think most people were expecting. Plus, I thought WW ended up looking like a Captain America copycat movie, set in a war and even with her very own Peggy Carter in the guise of Steve Trevor.

But perhaps the best news came midway through the weekend when it was officially announced that Brie Larson had been cast to play Captain Marvel/Carol Danvers. This is one of my most recent favorite characters – I’ve been reading her comics for a bit over a year. My concern over the casting was that they would go the “she’s a fighter, let’s teach her to act” route (with Ronda Rousey, among others) because of all the action that’s in the storylines. But there’s a hell of a lot of personal/professional interaction as well and I’m glad they chose a real actress for the role. Now, she doesn’t exactly fit the action hero look physically, but at least Carol Danvers isn’t supposed to be an Amazon (yes, I still don’t like the WW casting).

So anyway, those are the main things I came out of SDCC with. Sure, there was a lot more going on and what you were most excited about depends on your fandom. I just hope you were able to grab a bit of the excitement too.
