Miss Dawn’s Musings – Rebooting the Busters

Blog-MDMNot surprisingly, I saw Ghostbusters over the weekend. I’m not going to make this a full on review or anything, but I will say it’s the most fun I’ve had at the movies in a long time (and that’s saying a lot, considering the kind of movies I typically see). One of the best aspects was the mix of old and new.

Now unless you’re completely oblivious to geek news, you know there has been controversy about this film from the start. A lot of people didn’t want a remake (which it isn’t) or didn’t want a “new” version… and then there are the trolls who didn’t want a female-led cast (seriously?!). Sure, the original movie was great, it was fun, but it had flaws. I think a lot of the over-reaction about the new film is because so many fans put the original on a pedestal and see it as perfection. News flash: it’s not perfect! But neither is the new film.

GBposterThis Ghostbusters does not take anything away from the original or sully the nostalgia at all. It is actually a fantastic tribute to the fandom, with loads of Easter eggs and cameos. The general plot even mimics that of the original. Plus, it establishes itself as a good fourth installment in the series (two original movies, plus the game that Aykroyd himself considers the third installment of the franchise).

Ghostbusters is a comedy and a lot of the haters seem to have forgotten that. The concept as a whole was never intended to be taken all that seriously, even if it was inspired by real life events. Just go see the movie and have fun… there’s enough crap going on these days that it’s good to just chill in the dark and forget about things for a couple hours.
