Playing Around – Bending With Korra

Fans of The Legend of Korra are already familiar with Pro-Bending, something the series added to the elemental magic world of Avatar. It’s a spectator sport where “benders” used their abilities to combat opponents in an arena. And now, as part of a deal between IDW and Nickelodeon, it’s becoming the first official Legend of Korra board game.

The deal between IDW and Nickelodeon will actually result in multiple board game releases based on the world of Avatar and Korra, with Legend of Korra: Pro-Bending Arena being the first. In the game, players can be either Fire Ferrets (Korra, Bolin and Mako’s team) or their big rivals, the White Hill Wolfbats. And this is a deck building game instead of rolling the dice. Players control a team (there are miniatures!) and use bending cards to place tokens on a board in an attempt to push opponent’s back. Ultimately, the game is won when one player manages to push the other player’s team off the board completely.

Legend of Korra: Pro-Bending Arena is a two player game for ages 12 and up, well suited for the show’s fan base. IDW’s kickstarter runs until the end of September for anyone wanting the deluxe edition of the game (not surprisingly, it’s already doubled its goal). The game’s expected release date is fall 2017, with the deluxe edition (available only via the kickstarter) in early 2018.
