Playing Around – Elder Gods Gaming

If you’re a tabletop gamer into the horror genre, you very likely have played at least one game that involves Lovecraft monsters or storytelling. There’s a high probability that it’s been a version of the popular Arkham Horror series. (No, Bat fans, this has nothing to do with the asylum in the bat-verse.) For those unfamiliar, it’s a Lovecraftian horror cooperative game that, essentially, involves defeating (or escaping) lots of nasty monsters. But that’s not the only tabletop game dedicated to the Elder Gods.

An equally popular, quick play (30 minutes) card game is Call of Cthulhu, which puts players in charge of some of the elements of the Cthulhu mythos. It’s a 2-player game of strategy that has a good degree of variety and customization possible. Though new elements are no longer being produced, there are more than a dozen expansion packs available, which will keep players busy for some time.

A newer board game, from the makers of Call of Cthulhu, is Cthulhu Wars, which raised $1.4 million on Kickstarter a couple years ago. In this 3-4 player RPG (with expansions allowing up to 8 players), each player takes on the role of a monster (or entire faction) to take over the world. The gameplay involves gaining power, recruiting cultists, casting spells, battle and more. It’s a pricey game ($200), but comes with a lot of pieces, including 64 miniatures.

There are plenty of other games out there to indulge your worship of the Elder Gods, including Cthulhu versions of Fluxx and Munchkin. So go out and find the one that calls to you!
