Playing Around – Slaughter Those Pesky Kids

There’s a pretty typical scenario in the horror genre: a group of teens/college kids are out for a good time in a somewhat remote or isolated location when they come across a monster and need to fight it to survive. But why does the monster always get the short end of the stick? In Monster Slaughter the tables are turned and you get to be the monster hunting down and killing those insufferable kids!

You play as the head of a family of monsters, choosing from werewolves, vampires, zombies or golems. The ultimate goal is to get into the cabin in the woods and claim your victims. But other players want them as well and are able to help victims defend themselves to prevent you from winning the game. It all comes down to the cards played and the rolls of the dice. If you’ve played competitive survival style games, you’ll pick up the mechanics of this game pretty quickly.

From Ankama Board Games, Monster Slaughter is intended for 2-4 players, aged 14 and up, and game play takes up to an hour. There also seems to be a decent re-play factor, with the variety of possible strategies for winning each time. In addition to the three-dimensional board bearing the cabin, the game includes miniatures for the monsters and victims, tokens and dice, and cards for gameplay. The Kickstarter campaign (running through the end of November) shows the cool artwork and explains more about the game.
