She Geek Critique – Not My Fandom

Obviously, geeks love their fandoms. That is, after all, a big part of what makes us geeks to begin with. Whether it’s the worlds created in books or movies or games or on television, one we find what we enjoy most we take a deep dive and immerse ourselves in it. Of course, not every fandom is for everyone and there are a few biggies that I just cannot get into.

Star Wars and Star Trek. Now, I don’t outright hate these properties – I have seen the movies and some of the Star Trek tv shows. And I do have a preference for Wars over Trek (I prefer the fantasy side of scifi and as a kid I even had Star Wars action figures). But the worlds and characters and stories are just not interesting enough to me to get into. I don’t care about the Enterprise’s mission or the endless politics of the Empire, nor do I care much which characters get killed off. The movies are a good escape for a couple of hours and then I move on.

Harry Potter. When the books began gaining popularity, I was curious and gave them a try. I got through four of them before getting bored. The fact that they were written for kids didn’t help – YA literature is something I can’t read much of because everything is oversimplified and often repetitive. I watched the first couple of movies and was no longer interested in the rest. As with Trek and Wars, the characters and stories did nothing for me – to be honest, it’s probably the characters that turned me off most, considering my general distaste for humans under the age of 20. And even though I enjoy fantasy, the Potter world and its magic just don’t work for me.

Anime. This is a more generalized not-for-me fandom and it verges on hate. I have an extreme dislike for not only the animation style, but the storytelling of the majority of anime. Partly it’s the badly translated Japanese originals that make little sense and jump all over the place. But because I’m almost completely averse to the look of it, I don’t know if there would ever be stories I could enjoy because I can’t sit and watch them. I had a really difficult time getting through the Supernatural anime that came out a few years ago and really only watched it because Supernatural is one of my fandoms.

So those are the top three fandoms I can’t get into. If you’re into them, then good for  you. But don’t try to convince me why they are so great and that I should learn more about them and watch more – you’ll just get on my nerves and make me dislike them even more (and perhaps like you a little less in the process).
