This weekend saw two new movies in theaters that were continuations of franchises. Men in Black: International is the fourth film in the MIB series and Shaft is the second “modern” movie in the series, but the fifth overall (three of which are titled Shaft). The issue with having an actual franchise of movies – especially ones that are exactly direct sequels – is how to keep them relevant and interesting for audiences as time goes by. Back in 1971, a movie hit screens that took the film world by storm and became one of the most popular blaxploitation movies ever – I’m talkin’ ’bout Shaft (can you dig it?). Of course, even those who haven’t seen the movie (or its sequels or the 2000 remake or read the novels) probably know that Shaft’s “the black private dick that’s a sex machine to all the chicks”. I’m generally a live and let live kind of guy when it comes to remakes. If the creative team is adding a new dimension to the story or a logically different take, I am game for the ride. But, during issue 88 of GW1 it came out that there were plans for a Shaft remake… yeah, a Shaft remake. This movie is already part of the national registry and has influenced so many writers and film makers, what more can you add to this tale? Oh, I know… let’s make it an action comedy!
