If you’re looking for a space opera full of adventure, strong characters and all around good storytelling, Saga is the one. Created by writer Brian K. Vaughan and artist Fiona Staples, Saga follows two people from warring factions who found each other under interesting circumstances, fell in love, had a child and are trying to escape, well, everyone.
This is a high fantasy adventure with tones of Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones and even Romeo and Juliet. The story and the characters have depth and make you want to keep reading, not only to see if Alana, Marko and their baby Hazel can escape, but also to find out what’s really going on and why they’re being pursued in the first place. But take note: this is an adult story and not just because of the violence.
Additionally, Saga makes a statement about war and violence without being preachy. Plus there are an abundance of ethnicities portrayed, as well as diverse gender roles. Available in seven collected volumes so far, there’s no question why this series has won multiple Eisner, Hugo and Harvey awards.
