Comics Cosmos – Shattering Tradition

If you’re a fan of the New Mutants, X-Force or X-Factor, you probably know Shatterstar. Of course, if you saw Deadpool 2 you definitely became acquainted with him – even if that acquaintance was relatively short lived. Though he’s been absent from the pages of comicbooks in recent years, Marvel announced that Shatterstar is returning in his own miniseries this fall.

To get the basics out of the way, Shatterstar is a genetically engineered mutant from the planet Mojoworld, living  approximately 100 years in the future. On a mission, he travelled back in time to Earth, to when Cable was first organizing X-Force and became a founding member. He was part of the battles against a lot of forces in the X universe. (Sure, I’m skipping loads of detail – go read some comics!) Interestingly, Shatterstar is a character with a “confused” sexual identity, depending on who’s talking about it – Rob Liefeld considered him asexual while later writers “confirmed” him as bisexual and polyamorous.

Liefeld created the character in 1991 (yes, the man who created Deadpool the same year). He did get his own, short lived series back in 2005 (X-Force: Shatterstar), but has mainly shown up in X-Force and X-Factor books. The new limited series arriving in October takes a different angle on the character. “The series will be part John Wick, a dash of Will Eisner’s A Contract with God, and infused with lots of lots of interdimensional X-Men Super Hero mythos.” It sounds like fun for fans and newcomers alike.
