Meeple Moments – Game Spotlight: Warsaw: City of Ruins

Occasionally we feature a post from our friends at The Malted Meeple. Their Game Spotlight series highlights one of the many games in their libraries at Ravenwood Castle and The Malted Meeple. They briefly describe the game, how to play it, and why they like it.

Game: Warsaw: City of Ruins

September’s Game Spotlight shines on Warsaw: City of Ruins, an economic strategy game of city building through drafting and tile placement.

Well received at summer gaming conventions such as Origins and Gen Con, Warsaw: City of Ruins is a great new addition to our extensive game library here at The Malted Meeple. It was originally published in Europe by Grana under the title Capital, and was brought to the U.S. market by our good friends at North Star Games.

In Warsaw, players jointly build the city of Warsaw by building their own districts of the city over six eras, or rounds, earning income and victory points after each era is complete. Each era is divided into two phases: Construction and Income.

In the Construction Phase players draw tiles from that eras tiles and choose to pay to build tiles and add them to their district or discard them and collect coins for future use. Tiles represent residential neighborhoods, commercial sectors, industrial parks, and cultural centers. New tiles can be placed on top of old tiles, upgrading parts of the city from era to era.
