Playing Around – Be Excellent to Each Other

As the 80s drew to a close, one of the undeniably greatest ever time travel movies hit the big screen: Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure. Following two inept high school buddies who are doomed to fail history class until they are gifted a time travelling telephone box, the film holds up pretty well even today. Well a couple years ago, Steve Jackson Games decided it was a premise worthy of game play and released Bill & Ted’s Excellent Boardgame

The game follows the general plot of the movie in that the goal is to collect well-known historical figures as you travel around the board. And, not surprisingly, your phone booth doesn’t always end up where you hoped it would. The gameplay reads a tad confusing at first, but don’t get frustrated – players can get the hang of it within a round or two and it ends up being pretty fun.

There’s definitely more strategy involved in playing Bill & Ted’s than you’d think, based on the movie. But a game takes only about 30 minutes, with 2-4 players. Like many Steve Jackson Games, everything is packed into a reasonably sized box and it’s available for around $20. You get a board, playing pieces, tokens and movement cards… no dice needed.
