She Geek Critique – It’s All Been Leading to This

This weekend the movie Marvel fans have been waiting for arrived. And I’m not talking just the year-long wait since Avengers: Infinity War. No, Avengers: Endgame is the culmination of 11 years and 20 movies set in the MCU that audiences have laughed, cried and cheered their way through. And considering opening weekend smashed every previous record with a global box office take of more than $1 billion, everyone is seeing this movie!

Without revealing any spoilers, I’ll first say that this is a truly epic movie. Knowing what this film would mean for fans, Marvel, the writers, directors, producers and actors went all out. The plot isn’t overly intricate, but makes sense in the movie universe that Marvel has created. And the performances by these actors who have come to personify the characters as we know them are fantastic. It is pretty amazing how Marvel has managed to blow audiences’ minds with every movie, especially the Avengers ones. Just when you think it couldn’t get bigger and better than Infinity War – boom! – in comes the spectacle of Endgame.

The phrase “everything old is new again” definitely applies to this movie, as we get a lot of callbacks and references to earlier films and plot points. Sure, you don’t need to be a superfan, but it helps if you’ve seen (and can remember) all of the movies leading up to this. But for those true fans who love not only the movies but also the comics, there are some truly satisfying moments that we’ve been waiting to see (and hear) onscreen for the last decade.

Avengers: Endgame is a satisfying movie on so many levels. There are resolutions to events from earlier films (not just Infinity War). And, not unexpectedly, it wraps up a few things in regards to certain characters and teams and hints at possible things to come. (Trust me, make sure you have tissues or grab a couple of extra napkins at the concession stand.) But it also gives us the amazing action and fights we’ve come to expect of Marvel – and the most epic battle scene it has ever put on the big screen. The huge box office success is well-deserved and if you haven’t seen it yet, don’t worry – it’s going to be in theaters for a while yet.
