She Geek Critique – Not For the Weak

At D23 Expo over the weekend (Disney’s big biennial convention), a lot of announcements were made regarding the future of Disney parks and productions. Of course, considering what’s now in their stable, news was released about not only the upcoming Disney+ streaming service, but also Star Wars productions and Marvel. Not surprisingly, as much as I love Disney in general, I was most interested in finding out the Marvel news – and it did not disappoint.

Among the announcements, were three new Marvel character shows for Disney+ and one of them will feature my absolute favorite character: She-Hulk. It’s been a long time coming and there have been so many rumors over the years about She-Hulk or her alter ego Jennifer Walters showing up on tv or in the movies that I’d pretty much given up hope of ever seeing her brought to life. At the same time, I definitely didn’t want some random production company to get their hands on rights to the character and end up with something like that Korman Fantastic Four movie that was never released (though I have seen it, thanks to my comic guy).

But Marvel (and Disney) finally giving “Shulky” her due has me pretty excited. When I first discovered the character in my teens, it was during the Sensational She-Hulk years and I found her really relateable. Though a hero, she also led a relatively “normal” life, had a job, had (many) boyfriends. Her stories were both grounded and fun and she basically made superheroes real for me. But there have been a few incarnations of her through the decades (she first showed up in 1980), so it will be interesting to see which version the show decides to go with. I suspect it will be a more recent incarnation, so they can fit her in well with the rest of the MCU (of which these new shows are a part).

Not to get ahead of things, but obviously the tv series is the first step. And the next? Well, she was pretty much the one major female hero missing from Endgame when they all came together, so… A-Force? Yep, I’m going with A-Force.
