She Geek Critique – Out with the Old, In with the New

The end of one year and start of the next means looking back at what was and anticipating what is to be. There was a lot of great geekness in 2017 and, from the looks of it, a lot to look forward to for 2018. So I thought I’d mention a few things.

For geeks, 2017 was a good year for movies and we pretty much ruled the box office. Five of the top 10 moneymakers were comicbook movies (Logan, Thor: Ragnarok, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and Wonder Woman) and the top grosser was from perhaps the biggest geek franchise of all time (that would be Star Wars, in case you’re out of the loop). The fact that these movies raked in the bucks meant not only that the geeks were out in force, but that they were good enough to grab mainstream audiences as well. Regardless of what Hollywood “elite” wants to say about it, geek flicks are here to stay!

We also had a lot of great geek tv, from Legion to Agents of SHIELD to Punisher and all the comicbook goodness in between. We unfortunately said goodbye to a couple of shows – Orphan Black ended it’s five-season arc in spectacular fashion and BBC gave up on the insanity of Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency. But we did get a new season of Black Mirror and, finally, after more than 50 years, The Doctor regenerated as a female!

2018 is already stacking up to be another year of the geek. Just look at the huge movies on the horizon: Black Panther, Ready Player One (go read the book before it premieres in March!), A Wrinkle in Time, Solo: A Star Wars Story, Avengers: Infinity War, Deadpool 2, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Aquaman, Venom… and that’s not even all of them! Plus, continuing tv seasons, new shows and miniseries (Good Omens, anyone?!) on the horizon, so many books and games. Yep, 2018 is going to keep us all busy and entertained!
