Best Geeky Finds – Turn Back Time

Last weekend as I skimped my duty of having a new post every week, I was celebrating my birthday with my family at the Ohio Renaissance Festival in Harveysburg, Ohio. Despite being rained out in the middle of the afternoon, it was an exciting trip to the medieval era.

If you’ve never been to a renaissance festival, you can most likely find one near where you are during the summer or early fall. There are often theme weekends (last weekend was Highlanders – the second year my ancestors were rolling over in their graves as we ignored our ancestry), and with each weekend there are shows, music, vendors, and an all-out plethora of actors running the festival and taking every opportunity to send faire-goers back in time.

This is probably what I enjoy most about ren faires. Being socially anxious, I normally wouldn’t speak to anybody near me, whether I knew them or not. At the faire, staff and vendors actively talk to people, sometimes as themselves, but mostly in character. This can bring a person out of their shell as every faire actor I’ve met can easily talk to a person while in character and get them to respond, possibly even in a medieval English accent.

So why not check the internet to see if your nearest festival is open, put on your hobbit fittings or wizard cloak, and go back in time. If you are in Ohio, The Ohio Renaissance Festival is open weekends until October 29. The Great Lakes Medieval Faire is also open next summer beginning in July.
