She Geek Critique – Dragon Con Science: Power Man

Welcome to the second of my two recaps of Science Track panels from Dragon Con. This time I’m covering “The Science of Luke Cage,” which looked into the potential reality behind a character with impenetrable skin and incredible strength. The panel of scientists leading the discussion included a chemistry professor, an engineer, a biology professor and a biologist.  Continue reading

She Geek Critique – Dragon Con Science: The Multiverse

As mentioned in last week’s blog about Dragon Con, I attended a few panels that were presented by the Science Track. Like a true geek, I took notes, so this week and next I’m doing a recap of a couple of the panels that were directly related to pop culture. First up is “Managing the Multiverse,” which looked at the various scientific theories exploring the possibilities of multiple universes and/or timelines – a must for any geeks into comic book and sci-fi time travel and multiverse plots!  Continue reading

Irregular’s Intel – When the Morning Comes

You start to feel it sometime during the final blowout of a con or maybe during that last rushed meal between panels, but it is still there… that quiet gnawing feeling that “this is all about to end”. A convention can become an escape and cocoon of sorts. You’re surrounded by your tribe, being your most true self without having to explain or apologize to anyone. It’s awesome and filled with your own brand of reckless abandon, but then you see the cracks beginning to form and reality begins to creep in. It’s the packing for the trip home and making sure that you haven’t forgotten that awesome thing that you might have paid too much for, but, whateva, it’s a con! And the clock ticks closer to the return to the life before. But that’s just the beginning.  Continue reading

GW1 Issue 121 – Here There Be Dragons

Ever wondered what it’s like to attend one of the largest pop culture conventions in the world? Well Kylan, Miss Dawn and Jessie are back from the fun of Dragon Con, where they partied down with about 90,000 of their closest friends. There is so much to share! Plus, there’s an Oddmall this weekend and we have updates on what’s going down at Derby Downs. And, of course, there’s some geek news from the past week, including a couple of show cancellations. Listen now!   Continue reading

She Geek Critique – Dragon Con Download

If you listen to the show regularly, you know that Kylan and I were down in Atlanta for Labor Day weekend to attend the mega pop culture geek nirvana known as Dragon Con (along with about 90,000 of our closest friends). This was our fourth time there and it has been a few years since we last attended. A lot was (thankfully) as we remembered it, but there were a few noticeable changes as well.  Continue reading

Irregular’s Intel – It’s Time For a Con

I’m starting to feel the anticipation that comes with getting ready for a con. I’m thinking about what I’m wearing, what panels I’m going to, what parties to hit… how can I squeeze a nap in? At any rate, it is the weekend before and things are real! There are comprehensive lists of needs and wants… what luggage am I taking, what big purchase will I allow myself or will I do a bunch of smaller ones? I’m constantly checking the app and barely paying attention at work. This is worse than vacation short timer mode!  Continue reading

GW1 Issue 115 – Copious Quantities of Comic-Con

It’s our monthly Malted Meeple issue and our buddy Marcus Calvert decided to join us. By now you’ve heard (and seen) a lot of what came out of Comic-Con International (aka San Diego Comic-Con or SDCC), but we want to make sure you know about some of the cool stuff that was a bit more under the radar. Sure, we have details about the big Marvel and DC properties, but we also have some TV and comicbook news you might have missed. Listen now!    Continue reading

She Geek Critique – All the Things

Unless you live under a rock (or were vacationing there for the weekend), you know that Comic-Con International (aka San Diego Comic-Con aka SDCC) took place last weekend. It stopped being a true comic convention years ago and is now a pop culture and media convention. Of course, a lot of today’s pop culture is based on comicbook properties, so there’s a full circle thing going on anyway. The fact remains: SDCC is the grand-daddy of comic cons and it’s now where Hollywood lets loose with the vast majority of announcements and surprises for the year in pop culture to come.  Continue reading

GW1 Issue 113 – Regenerations & Magical Kingdoms

It’s issue 113 and we’re talking about the newly announced 13th Doctor for Doctor Who. For the first time ever, the Doctor is female – so what do we think about that? Plus we chat about the Doctor Who spin-off Class. And we have a bit of geek news and details about some of the announcements out of D23 Expo, Disney’s big convention last weekend. Listen now!  Continue reading

GW1 Issue 111 – Prepping for Comic Con

A lot of media companies have confirmed their presence at Comic-Con International (better known as San Diego Comic Con) and panel schedules are taking shape. So we’re talking about the properties that are big enough to get some time at the con and the huge ones that warrant a place in Hall H. But, of course, we have plenty of geek chat and news to hit first. Listen now!   Continue reading
