Comics Cosmos – Just a Girl and Her Gorilla

Comic readers will probably recognize the name Terry Moore. Though he has done some work for both Marvel and DC, he is perhaps known primarily for his own books, including the (Eisner Award winning) series Strangers in Paradise, Echo and Rachel Rising. Another title, which had a 10-issue run from 2016-17, is Motor Girl

The story is about Sam, a US Marine who served three tours in Iraq and came home with post-traumatic stress disorder due to her torture as a prisoner of war. She is a car geek and works alone in a desert junkyard, but has an imaginary friend to chat with – Mike, a talking gorilla. And that’s not the only oddity – UFOs just happen to come by on occasion. Plus, someone is trying to buy the junkyard and won’t divulge why he wants this particular plot of land in the middle of nowhere.

Motor Girl is a quick and engaging read. Sam and Mike are really likable characters and have great banter. But it’s also an emotional read, showing how Sam suffers with her PTSD and injuries. It’s really well written, especially considering the somewhat ridiculous premise. Definitely worth picking up the collected omnibus if you want something beyond the typical comicbook.
