Comics Cosmos – Ladies and Gentlemen, Venompool!

Mashups are a common occurrence in pop culture and comics are no exception. Writers and artists love being able to combine characters to see what they can come up with. One character that a lot of fans always seem to want to mix with others is Deadpool (where do you think Gwenpool came from?!). And one of the most fun incarnations happened in 2011 with What If? Venom Possessed Deadpool?

Obviously, being a Deadpool comic it’s not going to take things too seriously. And you get that right from the start with an 80s setting, a Boy George-looking Watcher and Galactus with MODOK on his butt (yep… it’s a thing). But no worries – this isn’t even the 616 universe! So when Deadpool is sent to destroy the Beyonder and ends up being invaded by the symbiote and then they all go out and party… well, it’s not exactly surprising.

Yes, this is a pretty ridiculous story, but it’s fun. It travels from the 80s to the 90s to the 00s, making all kinds of pop culture references and jokes at every stop. From Secret Wars to Jerry Springer to movie premieres, it’s all here. And, amazingly, the story actually makes sense. Sure, being outside the main Marvel universe, it doesn’t exactly effect much, but it’s worth checking out just how creative the creators got with it.
