Comics Cosmos – Long Live the Queens

It’s been more than a year since we first talked about Rat Queens here. As you may recall (or you could click the link), this philandering, foul-mouthed fantasy foursome of women travel around and do battle… for money, if possible. There’s a mage, a warrior, a cleric and a halfling thief who have, well, let’s call them interesting adventures.

Prior to the release of volume four, Rat Queens had been relegated to web comic (there was some behind the scenes drama involving writers and artists that I’m not getting into). However, writer Kurtis Wiebe brought the ladies back to print with a new series artist, Owen Gieni. So Rat Queens, Vol. 4: High Fantasies is a bit of a fresh start, though you do need to read the earlier volumes to really get to know this band of merry maidens.

In this volume, they gain a new Queen, the orc Braga who battled with them in an earlier story. But they still live in the crappy, rat-infested Palisade, still drink away any profit they make from battles and still can’t pay the rent. Oh, and Violet’s brother decides to start his own band of adventurers to compete with his warrior sister. As with the other volumes, this one is a lot of fun, especially for anyone who enjoys roving warriors, bards and mythic creatures and has some great art.
