Comics Cosmos – Mar-Vellous Beginnings

With the premiere of the Captain Marvel movie, Marvel, not surprisingly, has been promoting all things Carol Danvers and Captain Marvel. In February, they posted a list of “Captain Marvel’s 10 Definitive Issues.” Though not many issues, considering how long the character has been around, the list covers the first appearance of Carol Danvers in 1967 through her more modern incarnation in 2014. But let’s start at the start.

The first two issues on the list should be preceded by Marvel Super-Heroes #12 in 1967. This is where the Kree Mar-Vell is established as a captain and travels to Earth. Combined with Marvel Super-Heroes #13, which is where we first meet military security chief Carol Danvers (briefly), these are pulpy sci-fi tales with over the top dialogue and loads of action. And, though a touch dated, they are fun reads.

Next on the list is Captain Marvel #18 from 1968. Mar-Vell is still the hero, but we now have the blue, red and gold color scheme that has carried through to now. Though this issue continues the pulp story feel (there’s a massive evil robot dubbed Mandroid!), it also shows Captain Marvel saving the life of Carol Danvers after she’s been blasted with a mysterious ray. Of course, that provides the connection between Carol and alien powers that ultimately lead to her turn as hero.

These early issues may not be easy to find at your local comic shop, but check for collected volumes. Or if you have Marvel Unlimited, they are all available there.
