Comics Cosmos – Smooth as Silk

By now, everyone knows there’s a lot more to the Spider-Verse than Spider-Man – just the fact that there’s a “verse” is a big clue. Not only do we have multiple versions of Spider-Man (if you saw Into the Spider-Verse you know that), but there are other Spider-Folk, like Spider-Gwen, Spider-Girl and Spider-Woman. There’s also one who a lot of people may not know much about: Silk.

Korean American Cindy Moon first appeared in Spider-Man comics in 2014 and got her own title in 2015. Interestingly, she has almost the exact origin as Spider-Man – the radioactive spider bit Cindy immediately after biting Peter Parker. Unlike Peter, however, Cindy’s webbing is organic and she received training in how to use her abilities. But she was also locked away for years, along with others, for protection. Once she’s out, however, she gets into the superhero groove.

The first volume of Silk (collecting the first six issues) is not only a good introduction to the character and a bit of her background, but also a fun read. There’s a bit of a “is she good or bad” plot line, as well as appearances from not only well-known Spider-Verse foes, but also a friend from SHIELD. While not quite as much of a smart ass as Peter, Cindy does have a sense of humor. And she actually fights rougher than Spider-Man, which is nice to see, especially for a female hero.
