Comics Cosmos – Vengeance for Some

With a mix of horror and superheroes, Vengeance, Nevada could definitely be called an interesting comic. From writer/creator B.J. Mendelson and artist Piotr Czaplarski, Vengeance follows police office Kristen Jacobs in an apparently apocalyptic Nevada. We see elements of her past and a bit of her present. But there’s a lot going on in the first issue, which is not entirely a good thing.

We’re first introduced to a version of Kristen that’s not exactly all that human. Then there’s a flashback of what seems to be a stakeout. Then there’s a bank heist, but Kristen is somehow involved. And then superheroes show up and then maybe an alien thing and then a demon… or maybe not. Oh, and a jump to Chicago at the end. “Jumbled” is a good way to describe all the plots going on in the span of 27 pages. There’s a sense of an overarching theme, but there’s just far too much crammed into a first issue.

The art is straightforward and effective, with a sparse use of color to highlight certain aspects. It works well to not make what’s happening in the plot more confusing. And while the writing is good, it would have made a more engrossing tale to have focused on one, maybe two, plot or character elements and gone more in depth with those. World building is not a simple task and shouldn’t be rushed – there’s no need to establish all of the subplots in the first issue.

Of course, the confusion may be what the writer was going for, hoping to hook readers into more issues. So if a comic that’s a little bit sci-fi and a little bit horror with superhero team ups sounds good, Vengeance, Nevada may be what you’re looking for. It’s available now via Comixology.
