Irregular’s Intel – Know Thyself: A Cautionary Tale

I just finished season three of Marvel’s Daredevil. It is so well written, it is easily the best season of the series, if not the best season of all of the Netflix Marvel shows. It has great plot and character development and is on point with the page to screen adaptation of two notable Daredevil story arcs, Guardian Devil and Born Again. As much as I had intended to write a review of this season, there was something else gnawing at me that came from the show… the importance of truly knowing who you are.

Matt is a pretty emotionally distant character. He pushes those he loves away because he believes that he is trying to protect them. He then rewards their listening to him with even more distance, with some salty broodiness for added flavor. Since season two he has been heading down a dark path and believes that he knows what his ultimate end is, although his two closest friends see the signs and try to warn him before it is too late.

In Matt’s final confrontation he gives into his rage, but as he does, he sees who he could become and is brought back from the edge. He reclaims who he is and, although far from perfect, is born again as someone resolute in his convictions and ready to mend the bridges he had attempted to tear down. We see a Matt that we only saw glimpses of in season one. I found it refreshing to see such a difficult journey detailed with all of the bumps and bruises, and the realistic portrayal of the moment when his turning point takes place. I will need to chew on this season a little longer, but it definitely feels like a show that is a master class in the importance of self-forgiveness and self-awareness.
