Irregular’s Intel – What Makes A Great Racing Game?

The other day I was talking to my sister from another mister and she was watching her husband play a racing game. Of course, it had sports cars, but no nitrous oxide, no Fast and the Furious style street racing, just high performance vehicles on a road. There’s a place for that, but it got me thinking. I remember playing Need For Speed: Underground and how I loved the customization, building a rep and learning how to master the different racing styles. It was so far from reality, but I loved it for that reason. Now, as I come close to finishing Spider-Man, I’m finding that I could use a racing game in my life.

So, what does make a great racing game? I mean outside of realistic physics and challenging courses, what else is needed? I find that I love the ability to customize the heck out of my cars. I also love a narrative. It keeps me engaged when there is more than just going from race to race in the game. Maybe even having to avoid the police while trying to get to the top of the heap? In my research, I even found a game that allowed you to pick up junkers and mod them…have you met me?

So, I have some thinking and reading to do. There are a few games out there to pique my interest, but I want to be smart about it. If you have any suggestions for the PS4, let me know!!
