Miss Dawn’s Musings – I’m Bored

Blog-MissDawnsMusings I was chatting with a friend the other day and he told me he was bored. My immediate response was “But you’re a geek. How can you be bored?” He wasn’t convinced that being a geek made a difference, so I let it go. I do, however, think it makes a BIG difference.

I’ve never understood people who claim to be bored. Likely this is because I have so many interests (some that aren’t even geeky!) that I can always find something to do. Sure, there are times when I don’t feel like doing much of anything, but I don’t consider that boredom. It’s more a lack of motivation or just exhaustion. There is never nothing to do, but that’s what most people think when they claim to be bored.

As a geek, there is absolutely no way you can be bored. Your geekdom involves books and/or comics and/or games and/or television shows and/or movies and/or cosplay and/or tech… the list really does go on and on. And you can’t tell me you have conquered every aspect of your geekdom. There is no way that you have! New geek stuff comes out on an almost daily basis; there is always some news to catch up on or something new in which to indulge. And if you’re the creative/maker type, there’s always the opportunity to write about your fandom or create accessories for your cosplay or sculpt something or fine tune some code for a game.

And really, if you are a fan of ANYTHING you will be more than willing to experience it again, even if you’ve been through it a dozen times. Personally, I can watch Doctor Who or Supernatural on constant repeat and never get sick of either. I can dive into all five books in The Parasol Protectorate again and not get tired of the antics of Alexia. And there’s never a shortage of projects to work on for one of my cosplays, be it steampunk or otherwise.

So never tell me you’re bored. I’ll just come to the conclusion that you lack imagination and, perhaps, aren’t quite the geek I thought you were.
