Playing Around – Gaming the Con

This week is the time of year that most geeks wait for – it’s time for Comic-Con. No longer just for comics (that hasn’t been the case for more than a decade), every aspect of pop culture is represented in San Diego right now, including the gaming industry. So here’s a breakdown of some of the bigger video game panels, so you know what news is going to be hitting in the next few days.

We’ll get to some of the game-specific spots, but first let’s mention a few of the more educational panels. These are ones that will interest video game developers at all levels. There are panels covering crafting stories for games, writing for virtual reality, possible career paths into game development, working in the industry and how to become a pro in gaming and eSports. There are also a few practical feedback panels, like the one for reviewing game pitches and the game creator networking one.

Of course, a lot of Comic-Con attendees are gamers who want news about their favorite games. Though not likely to have huge reveals like you’d get at E3 or PAX, there will still be loads of details and new things to see. Plus, a lot of video game companies and retailers have booths and are doing giveaways and deals just for the con. As for panels, game-specific ones include Blade Runner, Hearthstone, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 (just the zombies!), Sonic the Hedgehog, Spyro, Mega Man, Resident Evil, Overwatch, God of War, Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Sea of Thieves. There is also a massive Marvel games panel (it’s in Hall H – the big one), one for Bandai Namco fighting games and one covering the world of Capcom.

Obviously there’s a lot more detail on all of these panels, plus even more not covered here. So check the Comic-Con website for all the info. Even if you can’t be in San Diego, you can at least see when you’re favorite games might share some news.
