Playing Around – Ready for the Oasis

If you’re a geek who loves to read (or even if you don’t), you have likely already devoured Ernest Cline’s Ready Player One. You also probably know that it’s being made into a movie, set to release one year from today. On this week’s episode of Geek Watch One, we mentioned a bit of innovation that’s being developed alongside the movie – virtual reality content.

In the novel, the majority of the population lives and plays within the VR world of the Oasis. So to play off of that, Warner Bros. has teamed with HTC to produce VR content directly related to the movie that will be available for HTC’s Vive device. No details on what the content will be, but a recreation of the Oasis is highly likely. HTC also plans to include some form of gaming, available through its Viveport Arcade platform.

Ready Player One is one of the most anticipated movies in the world, and has tremendous potential to engage and entertain the worldwide market, showcasing the transformative nature of VR, and what it can and will be,” said Viveport’s president Rikard Steiber. “Vive is delivering on the promise of VR and continues to be the most advanced and immersive VR experience available to consumers.”

Warner Bros. Worldwide Marketing president, Blair Rich, added “The virtual reality world within Ready Player One is extremely advanced, sophisticated and engaging, and with Vive, we chose the best system to represent the future of VR. Vive is the perfect partner to bring that to life and also has the broadest reach to global markets for the use of VR in home, mobile and offline channels.”

In addition to distributing Ready Player One VR experiences through Viveport for the HTC Vive headset and mobile devices, it will also be available at film festivals and other events. HTC is also looking into location-based VR and distributing material to VR arcades, making content available to mobile headsets in the US.
