She Geek Critique – Happiest Place in the Future

It seems that so many sci-fi/fantasy novels set in the future take a dystopian approach – nothing good can possibly come of the direction we’re heading. That can often seem a more realistic viewpoint. But it’s nice to be able to find a somewhat utopian take on the future. And with the re-release this year of novels by Cory Doctorow you get just that, especially in Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom

As someone who enjoys “sci-fi in the real world” stories and also loves all things Disney, I really enjoyed this novel. A story of the future in such a familiar setting is easy to follow and stay interested in. There is a cyberpunk element involved, but it’s not the dark dystopian variety – it’s actually a brighter version where tech works for the better of society. And if you happen to get killed, there’s always a backup clone of yourself to keep you going.

Fair warning that the characters, even the protagonist, are not entirely likable, but they do feel realistic. And the story progresses at a decent pace with a satisfying conclusion. So if you can get with the overarching premise of incredibly long lives and integrated tech, and if you have a thing for Walt Disney World (especially behind the scenes tidbits), give Down and Out a read. If nothing else, you’ll be transported to the Magic Kingdom with the descriptions of the park, especially the Liberty Square attractions.
