Whatz Your Geek? – Sarah the Librarian

VickyV: What shall we call you?
SG: Sarah Granville

V: Tell us a little about yourself.
SG: I’m a librarian primarily working with teenagers, born and raised in NE Ohio. My brother says I found a perfect job to use my useless knowledge. I like to think of myself as a professional geek! My turn-offs are intolerant people… sorry, wrong form!

V: So what’s your geek?
SG: Books! My aunt and uncle gave me books every year for Christmas, which is how I discovered my favorite book of all time, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. I read a lot of fantasy and teen literature, but there are few genres I won’t try. My favorite authors are Neil Gaiman and Rainbow Rowell. I love a compelling story, which is why my love of books extends to comic books, movies & television (someone has to write it), and musicians who have a story telling style.

V: How did you get into that?
SG: My mom was an English teacher and librarian before I was born, so there were always books in the house. She tells me I was 18 months old the first time she let me pick my own library book. My dad read Conan the King comics when I was little. Every month, my mom and I would go to the local drug store to buy him the latest issue while he was at school, and my mom let me pick one for myself. I have an odd little collection from the ’80s: Strawberry Shortcake, The Get Along Gang, Foofer, and She-Hulk.

V: What is your favorite memory?
SG: I went to San Diego Comic Con in 2007. One morning, not long after the Con had opened for the day and my friends and I separated to our personal geeks, I saw a man walk by me. My eyes locked with another woman and we said to each other, “Is that… it is!” And we took off behind this man, because, it was Joss Whedon! I found the courage to call out, “Mr. Whedon?” and he turned and stopped to talk with us! We lamented Veronica Mars being canceled and the fact that Joss was no longer attached to the Wonder Woman project. I asked if I could have a picture and he had his assistant take it. Pure magic!

V: Anything else you want to tell us?
SG: Everyone should check out their local library. Libraries have awesome books, graphic novels, and media collections to satisfy your geeky needs. There are probably even events and programs of interest for the discerning geek!
And Kylan, you know what you did. #jk #kylanandken2016
